Dollaghan, Salmon, and Trout fishing package, N.Ireland.

Dollaghan are a most peculiar fish. In the simplest of forms they are a sea-trout, however, they do not run to sea; instead they seek richer feeding in lakes – namely Lough Neagh, the largest lake in the UK measuring around 153miles long by 54miles wide. Dollaghan, in essence, are a brown-trout that goes to feed in lakes before returning to pawn in their native tributaries – thus becoming lake run brown trout. Either way, they provide exhilarating sport, sport that indefinitely rivals its sea-running brother. They are pursued in daylight and at night, much the same as sea-trout, and the tactics deployed for sea-trout work well for dollaghan.

In addition to Dollaghan, many rivers in the area, Co.Antrim, have an excellent run of salmon and most hold a very good head of wild brown-trout – both being available as separate packages or they can be combined with the Dollaghan fishing.

Fishing season

Although starting in March and ending in October on most of the rivers we cover, peak sport would be in the months of September and October for Dollaghan and Salmon. However, July and August can fish well, depending on water height, temperature etc. Trout fishing can be good throughout the year, with May and September being particularly fruitful. We have the knowledge to be able to advise you on when you should be where, so contact us with your requirements and we’ll do the rest.

Accommodation

Can be tailored and arranged to your exacting needs. We can arrange anything from campsites, B&B’s, plush hotels, through to self-catering cottages. Contact us with your requirements and we will do the rest. Please note that cottages and self catering units should be booked several months in advance to assure availability – they book up fast, as can hotels and B&B’s.

Fishing licences and permits

A valid Northern Ireland fishing licence is required for all that undertake these packages, we will purchase these in advance for visiting/foreign anglers, and include them in the cost of the package. Permits will be included in the price of the package and will be arranged prior to your arrival. We want to make your stay as enjoyable and stress-free as possible, ensuring that’s all you have to concentrate on is catching fish!

Tackle

Any rod between 9ft and 10’6ft with a line rating of between 7-9 will suffice for the salmon and dollaghan(you my prefer a double-hander, in which case a 13-14ft rod for a 8-10 line would suffice); usual resevoir/stillwater rods are great. Reels are to your preference, however, a decent drag system is recommended as is backing! A floating line, intermediate line, and a medium sinker accompanied with some poly-leaders are all that’s required. Nylon in strengths of 8,10,12 and 15lbs. Our guides will provide flies for the fishing session and advise you on set-ups and tactics (on guided nights). Tackle is available on loan for those without suitable set-ups, and for those that don’t want the hassle of bringing fishing gear with them on holiday. Spinning and bait fishing is permitted and we can advise you on what to bring if you wish to pursue these methods, which are very viable and successful when river conditions dictate

Flies

flies are provided free of charge on guided nights, and the guides will discuss what to use and when – maximising your chances of catching and broadening your knowledge and experience. Flies can be purchased from us in advance of your trip (available for booked packages only), being flies suitable both in size and style for the river you will fish. As recommendations, we would advise carrying the following patterns; traditional patterns such as teal, blue and silver, black pennell, black and silver, black and orange, black and red, black and blue. Snake flies, waddingtons, and tube-flies should be carried in various lengths and colours. Surface lures and muddlers can also be very successful .

Clothing

chest waders are recommended, although wading above knee height is rarely necessary or done – neoprene waders are particularly good when the temperatures start to drop, as are layered systems. Wading/rain jacket. It is recommended that some form of warm clothing is bought along as some nights can get cool – although rarely dropping below ten degrees Celsius. A wading staff may be useful. Some form of eye protection and buoyancy aid is recommended.

Travel Arrangements

We can arrange hire-cars from all major UK airports. Transfers can be arranged from railway stations to your accommodation, at an extra cost. The fishing guides can pick you up and take you back to your accommodation, should you require this service on guided days/nights.
