Lough Currane + Blackwater Salmon & Sea-trout fishing package, + Bass, Mullet & Pollack fishing, Ireland. |
|
|
Set in the South-West of Ireland Lough Currane and its surrounding coastline has much to offer the visiting angler. Firstly there’s the mighty Lough Currane which measures just under 4 miles long and 2 miles at its widest, the Lough is revered for its salmon and sea-trout run. It’s a fascinating Lough with plenty of interesting inlets, bays, and underwater obstructions to form likely lies and fishable areas. The Lough gets a run of several thousand fish each season, with numbers being closely watched and verified by the local fishery board.
Fly-fishing is the most widely adopted method on the Lough; however, trolling does take place and can be very successful – especially in the earlier months. Fishing on Lough Currane usually takes place from a drifting boat, which is a fantastic way of catching salmon and sea-trout – it’s a great way of covering a large area of water, truly exhilarating. Accompany the fantastic fishing with the welcoming locals – Irish hospitality is World renowned – stunning, un-scarred scenery, and you have yourself a destination dreams are made of! You have the dream, we create the reality.
In addition, the Bass, Pollack, and mullet fishing around the neighbouring coastline is tremendous - a sport and destination that is gaining popularity almost daily. We have experienced local saltwater guides who know the area and marks like the back of their hand! They know where to go when, and will help even the most inexperienced in catching these saltwater predators. Never tried Bass fishing? Well, you’re missing out! They offer tremendous sport on fly tackle, as well as spinner and bait. Why not take advantage of our surf-and-turf package? This will give you a true taste of what the area has to offer – 1 day fishing the local Blackwater river, 1 day fishing Lough Currane, and 1 day saltwater fishing! A package of piscatorial heaven.

Fishing licences and permits
Permits and Licences will be included in the price of the package and will be arranged prior to your arrival – they will cover the duration of your stay. We want to make your stay as enjoyable and stress-free as possible, ensuring that’s all you have to concentrate on is catching fish!
Tackle
(Lough Currane); Any rod between 10ft and 11ft with a line rating of between 7-9 will suffice for the salmon and sea-trout on Lough Currane; usual resevoir/stillwater rods are great. Reels are to your preference, however, a decent drag system is recommended as is backing! A floating line, intermediate line, accompanied with some poly-leaders are all that’s required. Nylon in strengths of 8,10 and 12lbs should be carried. Spinning is permitted and we can advise you on what to bring if you wish to pursue these methods, which are very viable and successful when river conditions dictate.
(Bass & Pollack fishing); the above rods and reels are also advisable for the bass and Pollack fishing. A fast sinking line should also be carried. We recommend bass/pike taper lines for this type of fishing, and highly recommend the airflo 40+ line range.
( Salmon river fishing); the Kerry Blackwater is a medium sized river and the above tackle will suffice, or a 13-14ft double-hander with a 8-10 line. Bait and spin fishing is also allowed.
|
Flies
Lough Currane; traditional patterns score well, with pattern such as; claret bumble, bibio, zulu scoring particularly well. Patterns such as dabblers and muddlers should also be carried. Flies should be in the 14-8 size range.
Bass&Pollack; baitfish and sandeel patterns work very well, as do poppers in the summer months.
Salmon river Blackwater; orange and gold combinations work particularly well, as do copper patterns.
Clothing
chest waders are recommended, although wading above knee height is rarely necessary or done on the river and sea packages. Wading/rain jacket/over-trousers. It is recommended that some form of warm clothing is bought along. A wading staff may be useful. Some form of eye protection and buoyancy aids are recommended, as are stripping baskets for the saltwater fishing.
Travel Arrangements
We can arrange hire-cars from all major airports. Transfers can be arranged from railway stations to your accommodation, at an extra cost. The fishing guides can pick you up and take you back to your accommodation, should you require this service on guided days. |
