| River Nith & Annan
Salmon, Sea-trout, Brown-Trout, Grayling fishing package
/ holidays, Scotland |
|
|
Very
few rivers in Scotland have more to offer the visiting
angler than this duet; the Nith and the Annan. Both
rivers are within easy driving distance of each other,
both draining into the Solway Firth - a rich feeding ground, which bares larger
than average sizes of sea-trout and salmon. From the
renowned and revered back-end salmon fishing on the Nith,
through to the huge, wild brown-trout of the Annan – whichever
takes your fancy these rivers can offer it, and more!
Both
the Nith and the Annan get sizeable runs of sea-trout,
runs which are on-a-par with many of the famous Welsh
rivers. Sport can be prolific in both the daytime and
the night-time, and evening dry-fly sport can be nothing
short of spectacular (the sea-trout feed quite freely
in the evening, enabling them to be targeted with dries)!
Both rivers get good runs of grilse and salmon, with
the run on the Nith being particularly notable – the
back-end run (late season) of salmon is well known, with
many fish of over 20lbs being noted every year. Both
rivers contain grayling, providing some superb sport
throughout the season. Brown-trout fishing is particularly
good on the Annan, where wild fish of 4lbs+ are regularly
caught.
The Nith and Annan are available on package breaks, be
they guided or unguided, through Angling Worldwide. Whatever
your requirements Angling Worldwide has got it covered!

Fishing season
Salmon and sea-trout; although
starting on the 25th of February and ending on the
30th of November (15th November Annan), peak sport
would vary according to river levels etc. However,
as a guide, June, July, and August can all be very
good months on both rivers for sea-trout, with July
and August being good overlapping months for Grilse
too. The back end salmon fishing can be good from
October onwards, with the end of October being particularly
fruitful, water allowing. The trout season open on
the 15th of March and ends on the 6th of October,
good sport can be had throughout the season with
mid-summer evening sport being particularly good,
and ideally compliments night-time sea-trout fishing.
Grayling fishing can be done throughout the winter
months, and both rivers have a sizeable stock of grayling,
with some shoals and fish being very large indeed!

Fishing licences and permits
You do not require a rod licence
to fish on the Nith or the Annan. Permits will be
included in the price of the package and will be arranged prior to
your arrival. We want to make your stay as enjoyable and stress-free
as possible, ensuring that’s all you
have to concentrate on is catching fish!
Tackle
(Salmon); Single or double-handed rods
can be used with line ratings of between 8-12; ideally
a 10ft for 8 line if fishing a single hander or 14ft for 10/11 line if
fishing a double hander. Reels are to your preference, but make sure
that they have a decent drag system and plenty of backing! A range
of lines should be carried to cover most eventualities
However, a good money saving tip would be to carry poly-leader sets in
5ft and 10ft, which would reduce the lines that you have top carry to
floating and intermediate. Our guides will provide flies for the fishing
session and advise you on set-ups and tactics (on guided days). Tackle
is available on loan for those without suitable set-ups, and for those
that don’t
want the hassle of bringing fishing gear with them
on holiday. Spinning and bait (worm only) fishing are viable and productive
methods, condition allowing. We can advise you on suitable tackle to
bring.
(Sea-trout); Any rod between 9ft and
10’6ft with a line rating of between 7-9 will
suffice for sea-trout; usual resevoir/stillwater rods
are great. Reels are to your preference, however, a
decent drag system is recommended as is backing! A
floating line, intermediate line, accompanied with
some poly-leaders are all that’s required. Nylon
in strengths of 8,10,12 and 15lbs. Our guides will
provide flies for the fishing session and advise you
on set-ups and tactics (on guided nights). Tackle is
available on loan for those without suitable set-ups,
and for those that don’t want the hassle of bringing
fishing gear with them on holiday. Spinning and bait
fishing is permitted and we can advise you on what
to bring if you wish to pursue these methods, which
are very viable and successful when river conditions
dictate.
Trout & Grayling); Any rod between
8ft and 10ft with a line rating of between 3-6 will
suffice for trout and grayling; ideally a 9ft for 5 line. Reels are to
your preference. A floating line is all that’s required. Nylon
in strengths between 2-8lbs should be carried. Our
guides will provide flies for the fishing session and advise you on set-ups
and tactics (on guided days). Tackle is available on loan for those without
suitable set-ups, and for those that don’t
want the hassle of bringing fishing gear with them on
holiday.
