River Coln fishing package / holidays in England, UK.

For trout and grayling fishing sport very few rivers can surpass that which the river Coln, the Queen of English chalkstreams, has to offer. The Coln is a rare gem of a chalkstream marvelled for its beauty and tranquillity as it meanders its way throughout the Gloucestershire countryside before draining into the mighty river Thames .

The Coln is a most manageable stream, making it ideal water for both the novice and advanced angler alike. There’s an abundance of Trout and Grayling in the Coln – mostly wild, but some stretches are stocked – and they grow big, very big! This is owed largely to the very healthy supply of food found for them in the Coln, from the mighty mayfly that makes its maiden flight around the end of May/start of June, through to a myriad of olives and sedges – a true piscatorial banquet.

The great thing about the Coln and its crystal clear water is that you can see all the fish before you make the first cast – however, beware as the fish that looks “just a couple of pounds” lying at the bottom of the stream invariably turns out to be just a couple of pounds more! You have been warned. Another great attribute of the Coln is that it offers sport practically 12 months of the year on some stretches, owing, largely, to the healthy stock of grayling that inhabit the Coln - a true sporting fish and one that will liven up any winter day. Why not take advantage of our winter warmer grayling packages? Or, our springtime Mayfly packages on the Coln? Being within easy reach of urban areas, such as; Swindon , Bath , Reading and London , there is little reason not to!

Fishing season

The trout season runs from the 1 st of April until the 30 th of September on the Coln, with the Grayling season running from the middle of June until the middle of March on most beats – contact us for further details, let us know your requirements and we’ll do the rest. Hatch-times may vary from season to season, being largely weather and temperature dependant; contact us for further advice on suitable packages.

 Accommodation

Can be tailored and arranged to your exacting needs. We can arrange anything from campsites, B&B’s, plush hotels, through to self-catering cottages. Contact us with your requirements and we will do the rest. Please note that cottages and self catering units should be booked several months in advance to assure availability – they book up fast, as can hotels and B&B’s.

Fishing licences and permits

A trout and coarse fish rod licence (which also covers you for grayling) is necessary for all that undertake these packages. UK residents can buy these prior to their arrival, or within the fishing locality. We can purchase these in advance for visiting/foreign anglers, and include them in the cost of the package. Permits will be included in the price of the package and will be arranged prior to your arrival. We want to make your stay as enjoyable and stress-free as possible, ensuring that’s all you have to concentrate on is catching fish!

Tackle

Any rod between 7ft and 9.6ft with a line rating of between 3-6 will suffice for trout and grayling; ideally a 8.6ft for 4-5line. Reels are to your preference – but make sure that they have plenty of backing, as a large trout can take some stopping/following! A floating line is all that’s required. Nylon in 3-6lbs should be carried.

Tackle is available on loan for those without suitable set-ups, and for those that don’t want the hassle of bringing fishing gear with them on holiday.

Flies

As recommendations, we would advise carrying the following patterns; standard mayfly patterns, such as the grey wulff, should be carried to cover the main mayfly hatch – in all honesty the fish can get so preoccupied that as long as the fly looks the right size and colour it will be eaten. Further to this, some general olive and sedge imitations should be carried, patterns such as; klinkhammers, stimulators, f-fly’s – these should be carried in a range of sizes down to 18’s and as large as 10’s.

When the trout are inactive or to persuade a deep lying grayling into taking some nymphs should be carried too. The old faithfuls such as the hare’s ear and pheasant tail nymph still have their place, and are great all round imitation patterns – these should be carried beaded and un-beaded. Further to that, some peeping caddis patterns should be carried along with some Czech nymph style patterns.

Clothing

Wading is prohibited on the Coln, as such; standard wellies or walking boots will suffice as footwear. A rain jacket and overtrousers are always advisable, as are polarised sunglasses – a must for spotting the fish - and a cap.

Travel Arrangements

We can arrange a hire car from all major UK airports, with the nearest being Bristol and some of the London airports. Transfers can be arranged from railway stations to your accommodation, at an extra cost.
