| Shad Fishing Holidays Package in Wales |
|
|
The Welsh Tarpon! A truly mysterious fish that very little is known about, other than that they frequent our rivers annually, on their spawning run, providing superb sport for the venturing angler. They possess outstanding fighting abilities, much akin to tarpon, and are found in very large shoals during their main run.
Shad exist in only a handful of rivers and their run up into freshwater lasts for just a few weeks (usually no more than 6 weeks). Two species of shad are targeted; the Twaite and the Allis – both of which provide exhilarating and arm-aching sport, often reaching over 5lbs! They are a member of the herring family, with wide silver flanks and very hard, bony mouths. When hooked they put on an impressive display, tearing round the pool and often leaping clear of the water - usually ejecting the hook as they do!
The shad is a great sporting species, and give it their all in a fight – all shad must be returned to the water, taking care in doing so. When found they are usually in large shoals and some fantastic sport can be had in a very short space of time – they are

|
| relatively easy to induce, making them ideal fish for the less experienced, whilst offering another species and exhilarating sport for the more seasoned anglers.
The shad is a wonderful fish to target as a lone species, however, why not attempt our Grand-Slam? Many of the waters that we offer shad fishing on are frequented by a multitude of species, including; trout, grayling, salmon, chub etc. The main grand slam would be; Shad, Trout, and Grayling in one day (even better, catch all 3 on the same fly/spinner)! Fancy a go? Contact us for suitable waters and times. Who knows, you may even go further than the 3 species grand slam!

| advance for visiting/foreign anglers, and include them in the cost of the package. Permits will be included in the price of the package and will be arranged prior to your arrival. We want to make your stay as enjoyable and stress-free as possible, ensuring that’s all you have to concentrate on is catching fish! |
| Tackle |
Fly; Any rod between 9ft and 10ft with a line rating of between 5-8 will suffice for Shad; ideally a 9ft for 6 line. Reels are to your preference – but make sure that they have plenty of backing and a decent drag system, as a large shad can take some stopping! A floating line is all that’s required. Nylon in 8lbs should be carried. Our guides will advise you on set-ups and tactics (on guided days).
Spin; A light spinning outfit is all that’s required to tackle shad – standard trout gear will suffice. Main line should be around 8lbs, and small mepps and similar bladed lures are all that’s needed.
Tackle is available on loan for those without suitable set-ups, and for those that don’t want the hassle of bringing fishing gear with them on holiday.
|
| Flies |
| As recommendations, we would advise carrying the following patterns; clouser minnows or crazy charlies in smaller sizes (1-2 inches overall) with chain-bead or dumbell eyes are all that’s necessary. They should be tied on size 8 or 10 hooks, and incorporate white and silver. Flies incorporating ‘flashy’ materials work very well for shad, but some sombre patterns in olive and black should also be carried. Simple goldhead patterns work well too, with gaudy lures such as cats whiskers working well.

|
