Fishing Season

Trout; Although starting in March and ending in September on most of the rivers we cover, peak sport would be in the months of April, May, June and September. However, March can fish well on some rivers, as can July and August.

Grayling; The grayling have a closed season from March until June. Between June and March sport can be prolific in almost any month, including the cold and short winter days of November-February. Dry-fly sport would be best in the months of September and late February, early March, with nymph fishing being successful throughout the season.

Accommodation
Can be tailored and arranged to your exacting needs. We can arrange anything from campsites, B&B’s, plush hotels,

through to self-catering cottages. Contact us with your requirements and we will do the rest. Please note that cottages and self catering units should be booked several months in advance to assure availability – they book up fast, as can hotels and B&B’s.

Fishing licences and permits

A valid trout fishing rod licence (which also covers you for grayling) is necessary for all that undertake these packages. UK residents can buy these prior to their arrival, or within the fishing locality. We can purchase these in advance for visiting/foreign anglers, and include them in the cost of the package. Permits will be included in the price of the package and will be arranged prior to your arrival. We want to make your stay as enjoyable and stress-free as possible, ensuring that’s all you have to concentrate on is catching fish!

Tackle
Any rod between 8ft and 10ft with a line rating of between 3-6 will suffice for trout and grayling; ideally a 9ft for 5 line. Reels are to your preference. A floating line is all that’s required. Nylon in strengths between 2-8lbs should be carried. Our guides will provide flies for the fishing session and advice
you on set-ups and tactics (on guided days). Tackle is available on loan for those without suitable set-ups, and for those that don’t want the hassle of bringing fishing gear with them on holiday.
Flies

As recommendations, we would advise carrying the following patterns; clouser minnows or crazy charlies in smaller sizes (1-2 inches overall) with chain-bead or dumbell eyes are all that’s necessary. They should be tied on size 8 or 10 hooks, and incorporate white and silver. Flies incorporating ‘flashy’ materials work very well for shad, but some sombre patterns in olive and black should also be carried. Simple goldhead patterns work well too, with gaudy lures such as cats whiskers working well.

Clothing

chest waders are recommended, although wading above waist height is rarely necessary. Wading/rain jacket. A wading staff may be useful and buoyancy aids are highly recommended. For winter fishing a layering system is recommended, as are neoprene waders.

We can arrange a hire car from all major UK airports, with the nearest being Cardiff and Bristol for the rivers Usk and Wye. Transfers can be arranged from railway stations to your accommodation, at an extra cost. The fishing guides can pick you up and take you back to your accommodation (on guided days), should you require this service.
